Knockoff: Glass Bottle Lamp

Hey there!

I've been such a procrastinator lately.  I've had all the supplies to make this lamp but just haven't gotten around to it.  And it's another one of those 30 second projects, like The World's EASIEST DIY Laundry Bag, that had me wondering why I had put it off so long.

I was inspired by these gorgeous Eva Colored Glass Table Lamps {$99} from Pottery Barn.

Unwilling to pay $100 for a lamp, I set out to find a glass bottle to make my own and I found the PERFECT bottle at Goodwill for $2.  You might remember it from "Thrifting Jackpot."  It's a handblown glass bottle with a slight green tinge and tiny bubbles, very similar to the photo above.

Along with the bottle I picked up a Westinghouse "Make A Lamp" Kit for $10 and a 9" Jonsbo shade from Ikea for $10.  Honestly, I tried to follow the instructions and put the socket together but it just wasn't making sense to me so the hubs had to step in and come to my rescue.

The steps are pretty simple after you put the socket together.  Just attach the shade, put the socket in the glass bottle and screw the lightbulb in.  And, seriously, that's it.  So simple and $22 is MUCH better than paying $100.

Let there be light!

I know I'm not the first one to knockoff a glass lamp and hopefully won't be the last because you should definitely skip paying retail and make your own!  And if you're one of the many who have already done so, feel free to share.

Until next time,

Let's check out those featured projects!

My FAVORITE link up from last week was...
Refreshed Adirondack Chairs from Alderberry Hill.  I am a total sucker for adirondacks.  It's such a smart idea to paint two non-matching chairs the same color and did you see the stained & stenciled chairs that she linked to in her post?  OMG - love!

Melissa's FAVORITE link up from last week was...
LIGHTEN UP from The Consigner DesignerDidn't she do an AMAZING JOB? LOVE it!!

And Jess' FAVORITE link up from last week was....
None other than my very own Octopus Triptych.  Thanks, Jess!

House to Home: From Blah to Ahh in Under an Hour

Hey there!

I'm in a "lots of jobs started and not a single one finished" rut.  I'm still in the process of painting the accent wall {if you've liked me on Facebook then you've already seen some work in progress photos and if not, you'll just have to wait to see the big reveal}, which means the open shelving and trim have to wait and the hubs is still working on mounting the microwave and putting up the window trim since the nice weather has allowed him to work on the foundation beam and mudroom flooring.  With all these left-undone projects hanging over our head, I've been getting a little ants-in-my-pants anxious about getting something done.

The kitchen was out of the question.  I mean, I could have worked on the accent wall some more but I just couldn't bring myself to wrap my now-arthritic fingers around that damn paintbrush and paint the same form over and over.  A quick project was in order.  One that would go from Before to After in a matter of hours and not get stuck in that awful During trap.  The bathroom was the perfect small space where, with a few quick changes, I could transform it from Blah to Ahh...in under an hour.

Our only bathroom is small, lacks storage and has no sense of style.  It does have nice natural light and we can work with the tile and builder grade vanity...for now.  We've had the supplies to give it a nice little makeover for weeks now, but the kitchen has taken precedence over any other DIY project.

Until today...

My first change was replacing that awful mirror {which was a mirror glued onto a piece of laminate wood} with an amazing Moen Glenshire Oval Tilting Mirror in Brushed Nickel that I picked up on sale from Amazon for $55.22.  I'd like to say that hanging it was easy and for most people I'm sure it is, but not me.  I was having issues with everything...I couldn't get the anchors in and threw a pretty embarrassing fit over it then realized reading the directions might help and discovered that I had drilled the holes too small.  After I put the anchors in and screwed on the mounting bracket, I attached the end post to each bracket and then struggled with attaching the mirror to the end posts.  I even dropped one of those tiny screws that tightens the end post down the drain.  Another tantrum ensued.  After a long cool down I realized that the end posts probably attached to the mirror PRIOR to being mounted to the brackets...and I could have avoided all of this if I would have read ALL of the instructions from the beginning.  You live, you learn...and you hide your face in shame, in my case.

Next, I tackled our storage issue by mounting two Baren glass shelves that I picked up from Ikea for $12.99 each.  The first shelf was mounted above the toiled months ago and, with the mirror in place, I mounted the second underneath it.  The downsides to these shelves?  They don't provide mounting supplies so the screws and anchors are up to you and they are only offered with a stainless steel finish.  I'll be breaking out the brushed nickel spray paint so that all our finishes match, but I can live with the SS until then.

With our countertops clear, I continued tackling our storage issue by implementing some towel storage.  Before, all we had was an over the door hook so we definitely needed additional storage for the bathroom staple. In a bathroom as small as ours, we wanted it to feel as big as possible so we chose brushed nickel hooks over a towel rack for their simplicity and lack of bulk.  I scored our Liberty Hardware hooks on Amazon for $1.68 each, now they're selling them for over $4.

So, let's check that list...Replace Ugly Mirror, Check.  Tackle Storage Issue, Check Check.  Now all that was left was to pretty it up a bit.  In addition to my beloved "By Order of the Management" etiquette print that I purchased years ago from John W Golden's Etsy shop, our white shower curtain from Target, an Ikea bath mat and a few vintage mason jars, I added towels that I picked up from Ikea for $7.99 each, a framed watercolor and a pretty plant the hubs got me for my birthday.

What'd we do with that strange mirror we replaced?  It's now hanging on our small entry wall.  I'm thinking a little revamp work on it with some driftwood is in order.

And that's it.  An updated bathroom in under an hour for under $120!  That sure makes me feel a whole lot better!

Is this bathroom really finished?  No, I have dreams of doing a board and batten wall treatment, peg board storage on the back of the door and replacing that builder grade vanity with a pedestal sink, so technically this "After" photo should be a "During" afterall.  But I don't forsee those dream changes happening for quite awhile especially with all those other projects hanging over our head.

And now I'm back to feeling anxious...better take another look at that After!

Do you have any quick and budget friendly updates?  I'd love to see them!

Until next time,

The World's EASIEST DIY Laundry Bag

Hey there!

Have you ever wanted to make something but don't really want to put in the time that it usually takes a project to get completed?  Well, do this.  It's practical, cute and INCREDIBLY EASY!  All the hard work is already done for you and all you have to do is pick out a cute pillowcase and some corresponding ribbon.

I first stumbled upon this on Better Homes & Gardens.  I saw it, loved it and pinned it.  Then it sat on my board, nearly forgotten, until I was choosing a project for the Pinterest Challenge: Winter Edition but the Tin Can Man won out, so still it sat, uncompleted.

Until today when I found the perfect pillowcase.  So, I got my supplies - embroidery hoop that I scored at goodwill for 50 cents, some ribbon leftover from a gift and the pillowcase purchased today for 99 cents - and got to work.  But first I had to read the instructions...or so I thought.  For some reason I didn't realize just how easy this project was when I first pinned it.  All you do is sandwich the pillowcase between the embroidery hoop and then tie ribbon around the fastener to hang it.  That's it.  It took me 30 seconds and I was finished.  Seriously, it took so little time that this post has now taken more time to write.

For a small bathroom like ours, this is the perfect out-of-the-way organization tool to keep our floor free of wayward clothes.  And how perfect would they be on the back of bedroom doors?  I'll be making two more of these for our and Luke's room.  And you should make a few too - it's just too simple not to!

Until next time

Green Living: Homemade All-Natural Laundry Detergent

Hey there!

Our house is going au-naturel!  And no, that doesn't mean we'll be sitting around in our birthday suits (you're welcome.)  Along with eating more vegetables, I want to get as many harmful chemicals out of our house which means replacing all cleaning products with homemade all-natural versions. My first attempt at homemade cleaning products was laundry detergent.  We used to use Kirkland's (Costco) eco-friendly liquid detergent and when the giant bottle finally ran out we replaced it with an all-natural powdered detergent.

Here's how I made my own super inexpensive and HE safe (very low suds) homemade all-natural laundry detergent.

Supplies (these were found in our chain grocery store's laundry aisle):
  • Borax Soap
  • Fels-Naptha Bar Soap
  • Washing Soda
Grate the Fels-Naptha bar.  I took the easy way out and used my mixer's grater attachment.  Mix two parts Fels-Naptha to one part washing soda & one part borax soap.  My mix ended up being 2 cups grated soap, 1 cup borax and 1 cup washing soda.

For a light load of just semi-dirty clothes, use One Tablespoon and use Two Tablespoons for a heavy load or REALLY dirty clothes.

Laundry detergent is just the beginning of our "go green" kick.  I'll be replacing even more household cleaners, making my own shampoo, and replacing our paper towels with fabric napkins and cleaning rags.  Interested in making the switch, too?  Young House Love compiled an amazingly extensive list of all-natural cleaning solutions.  There's also a liquid version of this that I think I'll try next time.  Check it out!

Until next time,

Secondhand Scores!

Hey there!

Another successful trip to Goodwill in the bag...check out my finds.

3 yards of fabric

One pillowcase - big plans for this one.  Stay tuned.

Glass storage.  I have an addiction...

I've been on the hunt for a clock in the kitchen and I was leaning towards the classic schoolhouse clock and then I happened upon this today... A whimsical mid-century Bill Miller Etc (Melrose Ave Los Angeles, Ca) clock.  It needs a little TLC but I'm digging it.

Glass shade choices for our pendant lights.  I'm leaning towards #1 & #4 for the kitchen and #3 for the bathroom.

#4)

Now, I just need to get started on all the future projects these will be a part of.

Until next time,
